I had the privilege of performing something incredibly intimate. A family friend of mine, whom I could claim as my older sister, threw a little surprise birthday gift for her boyfriend, Roberto Clemente Jr.
The picture she had me paint is a famous picture of young Roberto Jr. kissing a photo of his father that had passed away not long before. The 44 year old photo is sitting in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.
The painting was performed in the living room of my friends house, with only six people in attendance, including Roberto. The painting was completed in seven minutes and as I placed the handprint signature on the painting, I turned around, and tears were streaming down the faces of Roberto, Kailee, and her mother, Kim. I could feel the intimacy from the depths of my heart and it made me recognize the power that art can have. Art is intimate. Art is personal. Art is spiritual. In those moments I felt that more than ever. Roberto is an amazing person. He gave me a hug and thanked me.
I can honestly say that was the most rewarding experience I’ve had as an artist. Art has that ability to reach down and touch someone at the depths of their soul and make people feel and think about things a little deeper, a little longer, and with their heart a little more.
Thank you Roberto, Kailee, and Kim for this opportunity!
Thank you, Lord for giving me this gift!
God Bless You for what you do! Keep shinning the light.”
